I'm wondering if anyone out there is selling gift cards on line. My thoughts are that people could choose gift cards worth various dollar amounts and then somehow the balance would be updated each time they used their card until it is all used up. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who is doing this sort of thing, and how it was set up, etc.

Are you talking about actual gift cards that are maintained outside of Tessitura or are you talking about gift certificates that are printed in the form of a gift card. We do a variation of the latter, but not the former. It generates a standard Tessitura gift certificate in Tessitura with the gift certificate code number. We give them an option to receive an electronic pdf that they can either email or print themselves or we will mail a 'pretty' version of the gift certificate. We've got a card printer that can print the gift certificate code on the back of the gift card. These are not reloadable however and can only be used on transactions in Tessitura or on our website for tickets by entering the gift certificate code.
There are some organizations out there doing true gift cards - I know there have been several presentations at past conferences that you might want to take a look at.

Also, if anyone knows where the documentation on the best way to sell/issue Gift Certificates online (aka Web API, etc), I'd be very grateful for some links. I looked about a bit and don't really see anything.

Look in the Web API Documentation at the v10 API Documentation - there's a section labeled Gift Certificates which have the four main calls associated with GCs.

Thanks for responding, Heather. We will be looking into this more and once I have a better idea of what marketing is wanting to do, I may have more questions. I'll check out the documentation.
