Hello Fellow Tessitura Network people;
I just realized this is my 1st post in the forums, so I'll introduce myself while I'm here. I'm Sean Rector, the IT Manager for Virginia Opera Association in Norfolk, VA.
We would like to use Tessitura to sell merchandise in our Gift Shop. We haven't purchased hardware yet, nor have we set anything up in Tessitura; we're looking at starting from the ground floor on this project. We'd ideally like to have it up and running by September. I'm envisioning the use of a touch-screen PC w/ a limited interface & card-swipe for credit card processing.
Your recommendations are greatly appreciated.
Sean
Hi Sean,
I’ve done this before with a really quick-and-dirty solution that I’d be glad to talk to you about. However, most of it was lovingly stolen from Jeff Cass at Chicago Shakes – so he’s the real guru: jcass@chicagoshakes.com.

Hi – We use Tessy completely to run our online gift shop system http://www.strathmore.org/shop/, but don’t use it in person. I imagine though it would not be too difficult, but I don’t know if it would do stuff like scan bar codes. If you only have a few products like t-shirts, mugs and hats it would probably work OK.
Ours is just too large (thousands of products), so we use a POS system in person that scans in manufacturer bar codes and creates bar codes for our hand made products that don’t have any. We considered using our POS system to run the online shop too, but it would have required two separate log in and carting processes for our patrons, and they would never be able to add merch onto a ticket order.
Best,
Jen

Thanks for your post, Jen. We’re considering using something like Quickbooks POS, have it export the daily sales reports for importing into Dynamics GP – it’s just that we have a stored procedure set up for doing that for the GL Exports from Tessitura…
Luckily, we don’t have thousands of products – just hundreds…

Hello
We have just set up our online shop selling merchandise by setting them up as 'performances'. Our web company has customised the order screen so that the 'seat' and 'date' and 'venue' dont appear. However they do in the confirmation email which comes from Tessitura. Has anyone else found a solution or had anything written to suprress this (as i don't want to confuse our ticket/merchandise buying public)
Thanks
Cait, Live Theatre Newcastle
Hi Cait,
We also sell merchandise with is setup as a 'performance' in Tessitura: http://www.abbeytheatre.ie/shop/
We customised the XSL for the confirmation email to put the merchandise items in a separate section.
The coding for this basically involved putting "facility_desc='Merchandise'" in the merchandise section and putting "facility_desc!='Merchandise'" in all the other sections.
I've pasted a larger excerpt of the code at the end of this post but I can email you the full XSL file and an example of the confirmation if you want.
cheers, Dara
