We would like to sell gift certificates on-line. I have some idea on how to set this up but would welcome any advice especially what informaation we need to ask/suppy our web provider with.

The API provides methods for this - the methods can be found in the Gift Certificate Methods chapter of the documentation, specifically PurchaseGiftCertificate and probably GetGiftCertificateInfo if you want to display the purchase in the shopping cart.
