Role of Donate for Resale in Response?

Wanted to get a sense of who out there is using Donate for Resale as part of their COVID-19 response, and in what scenarios are you using this?  What's the goal that donate for resale accomplishes for you on a cancelled performance?  Are your price type GLs set to return to the same GL, or to a different GL?

  • Hi Kelly,

I just wanted to clarify how Donate for Resale works regarding the financial side of things. When you use this function, no money is moved for the ticket that is donated. It returns the seat to inventory without generating a credit or a GL transaction. The 2nd sale of the seat is when the Donate for Resale GL comes into play. If the seat gets sold again, the revenue from that second sale can go to a different GL than the original sale.

To sum up, the Donate for Resale function is really more about the resale side of things than the donate side of things. It's a way to put a seat back in inventory without taking the money from the first sale out of a performance's revenue bucket. That's probably of more use in a regular situation of sales still happening than in the current COVID-19 situation.

For good measure, here's a link to the Donate for Resale help topic:

  • Thanks, Kevin! I've been trying to communicate that across our orgs but there is potentially a desire to keep the money on the "ticketing" side or in the show and what a recommended practice might be in that scenario.  RTB would keep the revenue in the show if the return GL is set up that way but I am wanting to see if there are good use cases for this or if our recommendation would be to flat out not use Donate for Resale in this scenario.

  • We decided to setup funds for each of our performances.  The funds have the same gl code as the performances, so the money stays within the show.  This way we are able to easily track that a ticket was donated.  I found reference to this in the documentation that Kevin attached.  I also made a tutorial on how to create the funds which I would be happy to email to you!

  • Thank you, Liz (and Kevin, again)!  I realize today that I was getting myself mixed up about the return GL piece - it's been awhile since I've looked at Donate for Resale and I was confused "following the money."  Having the fund have the same GL as the performances would probably work well for some of our orgs.
