Pricing Rules: Add On

I am attempting use the add on rule to restrict the number of add on seats purchased based upon the quantity of the qualifying product and I cannot get the constraint to work in test. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same.

The recipe says:

Discount Offer: Receive 1 free drink voucher with each full priced ticket

  1. On the Pricing Rule tab, select a rule type of Add On.
  2. Select Price Type Change as the Mode and then select a comp price type.
  3. Select the performances that will qualify for free drink tickets from the Product Chooser in the 1st criteria line.
  4. Enter 1 to 1 as the qualifying number of seats range in the 2nd criteria line.
  5. Select the default/full price type in the 3rd criteria line.
  6. Select the drink voucher performances from the Product Chooser in the 4th criteria line.
  7. Select the initial drink price types that will qualify for the discount (generally your default/full price type) in the 5th criteria line.
  8. Enter 1 as the maximum number of drink vouchers that can be discounted per voucher performance, per order in the 6th criteria line.
  9. Save and then make a copy of the rule.
  10. On the rule copy, change the qualifying seat range in the 2nd criteria line to 2 to 2.
  11. Change the maximum on the 6th line to 2.
  12. Repeat the process of copying the rule and increasing the qualifying counts and maximums up to the total number of full price performance tickets you want to allow to receive drink vouchers. Having a separate rule for each qualifying quantity of performance tickets assures that a customer will not be able to receive more drink vouchers than tickets purchased.

So, 1 qualifying ticket gets you 1 drink voucher. Two qualifying tickets will let you purchase 2 drink vouchers, and so on.

My rule says, buy 1 qualifying ticket to x and you get 1 qualifying ticket to Y, but I am able to add more Y tickets than I have purchased in X.

I figure I am misunderstanding the functionality of the rule or I have the ranking wrong or the rule is not quite working.

Anyone have any guidance around this?

  • Hi Dot,

The important thing to remember with this recipe is that the pricing rules can’t prevent someone from adding voucher tickets to the cart, they can only control how many voucher tickets will be repriced after they are added to the cart. So if one performance ticket is in the cart and then two drink vouchers are added to the cart at the Full price type, the pricing rule would change the price type on one of those vouchers to Comp and leave the other at Full.

    Does that make sense?
