Comp Policy - best ideas HERE

I am looking at proposing some changes to an aging comp policy.  It will have to work across different venues and series and facilitate comps for VIPs/Invited Guests, Staff, Board Members, Partners and other stakeholders.

I wanted to reach out to the network to see if you can share elements of what works/doesn’t work for your organisation/venue.

Do staff work off a yearly allocation?

Do you wait until the day before to arrange staff comps (or closer to the event)?

Do you just have regular staff offers /discounted tix instead of comps?

Do you allow comps for board members/staff members only under special circumstances?

Is it important for staff to connect with the content in this way?

What works for you?

Thanks,

Michael

  • Hi Michael,

I think so much depends on what kind of venue you are…  I’m at a producing venue now, and our comp policy is two tickets to each production, and you are welcome to ‘fly standby’ (house manager puts you in an empty seat on the night, if available) if you’ve already used your comps.  Development has two held seats per performance to use as they see fit, and those holds get released 48 hours prior to showtime.  We all love it, and I don’t think there’s ever really been a problem with the administration of it.

A prior venue I worked at (much larger, and did all kinds of things- presenting, producing, outside hires) had a policy where you could submit a request to the executive assistant, who would assign staff comps after all VIPs and special guests had been taken care of, out of an allotment of house seats that was part of the contract with the event producers.  This worked slightly less well as there was never a guarantee you would get tickets, and you often wouldn’t know until the day of the event.  But I think it was the best that could be done at the time.

What I’m excited about is the potential for pricing rules and staff tickets.  I know others on the forums have done some work in this area, and I think if you wanted to offer staff discounts, this would be a great way to do that with a low admin overhead.

    Hope this helps a bit!

    Cheers,

    Kathleen

  • Thanks sharing Kathleen,

We are a resident company at our main venue.  I have also worked in marketing at a big venue and want to bring some of that to this comp policy.

I want to find the balance between comps as a fill strategy late and comps as a perk of the job I guess.

I am coming from a venue where you did not know until at best 48 hours before but you could get a good idea if you kept an eye on sales.

I want to find the balance between encouraging everyone to engage with the art and giving away free tickets weeks in advance of a controlled pool of shows.

    regards,

    Michael
