Hello Fellow Tessiturians,
I am new to pricing rules and need assistance in building a rule for an event in ticketing. The tickets cost $30 each, but we want to sell them at a discount, 4 tickets for $100. This means that once the order is at 4 tickets, the rule should switch the ticket price from $30 to $25 each. I have made several attempts, which have sadly failed. I have also created a pricing rule set, which has the pricing rule associated.
Attempt:
Type: Seat Volume
Category: Pricing Rule
Maximum Seats: 4
Action
Mode: Price Change
Discount Amount: $5.00
Criteria:
For each of these performances (I inserted the appropriate perf.), purchase 4 to 5 seats at these price types: $30 tickets
Apply the rule to a maximum of 4 seats.

Thanks!

Hi Lewis,
For the first "maximum seats" value (the one in the General section), leave that blank. It actually controls the total # of tickets that can use the pricing rule rather than the per-transaction total. So having it set at 4 only allows 4 tickets to ever qualify for the promotion.
If the rule should only trigger when 4 tickets are in the cart, you can set the range under Criteria to "purchase 4 to 4 seats". If the idea is to discount only 4 seats, but allow the customer to purchase additional full-price tickets, I would set the range to something wide, like 4 to 99 seats so the rule triggers
Did you add the pricing rule set to the MOS that will be selling the discounted tickets? If not, go in to MOS Maintenance and find the column for Pricing Rule Set to associate it.
Let me know if you have any other questions or if it's still not working!

Hello Justin,
The MOS fixed our issue, which is great! We can get the discount to apply to 4 tickets, then the 5th ticket is at full price.
Do you know if it is possible for a discounts to be applied to multiple sets of 4? For example, if someone buys 8, it switches back to the 4 to $100 rule, so the total cost would now be $200. But if they purchase 9 tickets, the cost would be $230.
Thanks,
Lewis
Okay, I see what you're trying to do now! Yeah, it's totally possible, but you'll have to use a different type of rule. "Seat Volume" is going to qualify all eligible seats in the order for the rule at once, so it can only run once per order. "Buy One Get One" qualifies seats in chunks that you specify through the criteria, so if you specify "for every 4 seats," it's going to find 4 qualifying seats, apply the rule to those seats, then search for another 4 qualifying seats, etc . . .
Delete the Seat Volume rule and start a new one using the Buy One Get One type.
Criteria
For each of these: (your perfs here)
for every 4 seats
at these price types ($30 ticket)
Apply the rule to 4 of those seats
to a maximum of 999 (or another unreasonably large number) seats
Hope this solves your problem!
Justin
After some digging, we have had success and applied 3 rules under 1 set.
First rule: Purchase 4 to 7 seats (maximum of 4 seats)
Second rule: Purchase 8 to 11 seats (maximum of 8 seats)
Third rule: Purchase 12 to 99 seats (maximum of 99 seats) because after 12 seats, the $25 discount will be applied to all seats.
Is this how you would have gone about it or do you have an even simpler way? Thank you so much for all of your help and support to make this happen!
That works, too! A slightly simpler method would be to have a seat volume rule for 12+ seats, then the BOGO I replied with in the same rule set. Orders that qualified for the 12+ seat volume would get every ticket discounted automatically while orders under 12 seats would be passed down for qualification by the BOGO rule.
Ah, I see. This is great! Another question... since our staff is used to asking how a patron heard about a show after they have taken payment, I want to add a messaging rule that pops up when they select the performance, price, and seats. That way, the message pops up and says to click the appropriate source to activate the rule.
I was trying to do that, but the message is popping up after I have clicked the source. I think it has something to do with the Type, but I'm not quite sure.
Try a Product Only message set to trigger on all appeals/sources. Criteria should be restricted to the applicable perfs and $30 Price Type. That should have it trigger immediately, regardless of MOS, based on the perf/price type line item combo.
