Advice for a Student Ticket Lottery

There is a performance on our next season that we are expecting to be very popular and to sell out quickly. We want to ensure that we make a good number of tickets available to students and would like to do so via a lottery.

I see in previous questions posted on the subject that Royal Albert Hall and The Public Theater have programs they like. Would anyone else have suggestions based on experience for approaches that work?

Anyone want to help prevent headaches by sharing things that have been tried and gone horribly wrong?

    Will your Student Lottery be in person only? If so, I like the Wicked model. In the lobby at two hours before curtain have the students fill out slips of paper with their name and if they need one or two tickets. 90 mins prior to curtain do a random drawing in the lobby until all the tickets are gone. Use a stamp or sticker or wristband for the winners so that the box office knows who to sell the tickets to. You can have the id presented at the time of sale and just check with your sales person to make sure that everyone had ID and that the drawing has concluded.

    We are looking to have an advanced lottery for student tickets however I really like this idea for managing what will likely become an at-the-door wait list.
