We are a large outdoor concert venue in an urban environment and have frequent NSCAN issues due to our continued struggle to keep a consistent, reliable internet connection outdoors. The end result is lots of "lost scans".
We are currently on RAMP and use two portable, static IP hotspots to connect to the internet. Our signal between the scanners and the hotspots is often an issue, as well as our hotspots connecting to the cellular signal (often due to the large amount of people in the venue using electronic devices)
Has anyone mastered utilizing NSCAN in a high capacity outdoor environment and can share recommendations with us?
Thank you in advance.
Is the public using your hot spots also? If so, the first I would do is to work to separate out the scanner traffic from the general public use. This could be accomplished 2 ways. One way would be to have separate APs running the scanners. Another way (if supported on your APs) would be to create a separate SSID for the scanners and prioritize this traffic over “Guest” use. Improving the signal strength between the APs and scanners will be crucial to stability. If budget allows, separate APs for the scanners would be my choice as this would prevent the APs from getting overloaded by a large number of connections.
Depending on which scanner model(s) you’re using, you may want to experiment with hard-coding which radio band the scanner uses (2.4/5ghz). You may find that one works better than the other in your environment. As a general rule, 2.4ghz has a longer range than 5ghz, however 2.4ghz can become congested in high density environments. Each environment is different so you will have to do some testing.
Sounds like you’re using a cellular connection for the internet on the APs. You may want to see if you can determine which cellular provider has the highest signal strength in the area and highest capacity. Sometimes this can vary greatly between providers.
