NSCAN Optimization

We are a large outdoor concert venue in an urban environment and have frequent NSCAN issues due to our continued struggle to keep a consistent, reliable internet connection outdoors.  The end result is lots of "lost scans".

We are currently on RAMP and use two portable, static IP hotspots to connect to the internet. Our signal between the scanners and the hotspots is often an issue, as well as our hotspots connecting to the cellular signal (often due to the large amount of people in the venue using electronic devices)

Has anyone mastered utilizing NSCAN in a high capacity outdoor environment and can share recommendations with us?

Thank you in advance.

  • Fortunately we only needed to do this a few time a year, but we have been primarily successful using NSCAN outdoors with hotspots.  The configuration that worked best required enabling MAC filtering to limit access to the NSCAN device.  This allows the hotspot radio to ignore the throng of devices searching a connection.  We attempted hiding the SSID, but that did not work well.   Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi - we have two venues, the largest of which is about 1100. We have one gate with NSCAN at each venue and usually operate two to three NSCAN at a time. We do have drop outs on the scanners but they are fairly stable. We suspect the wifi in the device is not that powerful so we ensure the scanners are as close as possible to the Access Points. If staff move further away even a few feet they definitely increase chance of losing connection. We have ADSL at the larger venue. We occasionally use wifi hot spots but we route traffic back through our office IP with Fortigate device in order to get a static IP but the wifi signal on these is also low so proximity is important. How do you get static ip with hotspots? We also once used a wireless bridge where we had good internet connection about 500 metres from the site. Not sure if this is of any help, by all means let me know if you have any questions.
