Alternate methods for Memberships

When we publish new program books we include a list of donors and their levels.  In the past this has been derived through memberships.  However, the development department would like to recognize people based on the total of contributions for a 12 month period rather than a calendar based membership.

I am planning on re-working our custom report to use this logic but I would be interested to know if anyone has come up with a custom way of assigning memberships based on similar logic.  I would like to keep the memberships in place as a tracking tool but the rolling 12 month time frame throws the traditional way of assigning memberships out the window.
