Re-installing Boca ticket printers

I have trouble when I swap or replace ticket printers.  The computer doesn’t seem to recognize the new one properly.  It looks good in devices/printers, but nothing prints from Tessitura.  The print queue then shows a document in an error state.  It seems you used be able to remove the printer, then when you connected a new one Windows would take you through the add printer routine.  Now it seems to just use the same name it used to have but it doesn’t work.  Something must be left over from the old printer and I cannot figure it out.  Anyone have a clue how to remove an old ticket printer and install a new one.  (Windows 7, and using USB connection)

Thanks!

…Dave

After repeatedly removing and adding the printer, it finally took.  Sheesh!  It used to be a 5 minute task on WinXP.  I hope this doesn’t continue with others!!   I’ll take your advice and shutdown before unplugging.

Thanks for your assistance on this.

We have had the same trouble with BOCAs on USB.  I have ended up creating a new USB port in Windows and installing he BOCA to that new port and that seems to solve it.  We also follow the practice now of shutting the computer off before disconnecting a BOCA attached with USB, and that seems to prevent the issue from happening in the first place.

  • I wanted to add some additional thoughts here...

We've found that overriding any of the defaults whilst installing a USB BOCA printer in Windows 7 does not work. The best bet is to install the printers as standard, letting Windows choose the default BOCA drivers.

Once everything is installed you can open the Printer Properties window for the printer and go to the Advanced Tab.

Here you can select a new driver and using the 'New Driver' button and can use the 'Add Printer Driver Wizard' to specify the Generic Text printer driver.

This seems to be specific to USB and Windows 7

The point mentioned earlier about shutting down is a good one (tied to USB, as well)

It is also worth mentioning that if there is an old printer installed (to be replaced), make sure it is removed completely before installing the new printer.

  • Hi JD,

Just today I discovered what you have detailed above in my own research (re: Windows 7 and USB Bocas), but still need to figure out the best way of dealing with our particular situation.

We use a small fleet of laptops and Boca printers (3) in a "remote box office" set up for shows at a few of our secondary venues. These laptops have other box office uses, so they won't always be connected to the same printer when turned on. So far, these printers have installed themselves as new every time they've been connected to a laptop, which of course has them install with the Boca driver, such that the properties must be set manually each time they are set up.

Do you know of any way to modify the automatic printer install process so the 'Generic / Text only' driver is used by default? Or perhaps to disable driver installation entirely and set up a single "printer" that will just send generic text to any attached USB device with print support?
