Expanding the phone extension field

Team,

My organization wants to expand the phone number extension field from 4 characters to 5/6. I do not see a way to make this possible, however I might be overlooking something. Has anyone done this?

The mask and edits for phone numbers are in TR_COUNTRY, it doesn't specify the maximum length you can go which I believe is 30 which could do some bad things to reports. I've got a few vendors that use seven digit extensions, this seems to be getting more common.

The mask and edits are starting to showing their age. Our current issue with this is that the single edit for a number (#) allows blanks, rather than having an edit for a required number and optional number. This was probably a easy simplistic way to deal with converted data or the few remaining areas that didn't require 10 digit dialing. We didn't think this was a problem or even realize it until we started to find phone numbers with blanks in places other than the extension. We had an expensive charge back issue on one of these accounts that has pushed this in into the bug category for us.
