Making salutation changes automatic

Hello all, I have worked out a salutation format that works for our organization and I go into the Names tab to update this salutation. Here is the problem - If I update Name 1 or Name 2 in the main constituent header: ie. Mr. John Smith and Ms. Elaine Jones get married and I and change Name 2 to Ms Elaine Smith, the names tab/ salutation doesn't auto change. The salutation in the names tab previous to the change said: Mr. John Smith and Ms. Elaine Jones and it doesn't change over to Mr. John and Mrs. Elaine Smith. I want it to change over automatically whenever I edit the names in the general tab. Can anyone help me out with how I can set this up to happen automatically? Thanks, Erin

  • This can be a frustrating thing to add to data entry processes and train staff on.

Just a thought about why I think this is a good thing: In my organization, an automatic trigger of the Gen Sal process would also be a problem.  Sometimes constituents request a specific salutation that does not follow our typical formats. So we consider it best practice to require whomever is making a name change to double-check the salutation to make sure we honor the constituent’s request and/or the original intent of the request.  This kind of thing is something you just can’t code (or at least I can’t), so it’s best to rely on human understanding and customer service instinct to make those kinds of decisions for each specific constituent.

Of course, in doing this, we take upon ourselves the burden of training our folks to check the salutation every time they make a name change.  It can be challenging, but it’s possible.

I know that doesn’t answer your question, though.  Unfortunately, I have no idea how to cause the Gen Sal to auto-trigger when a name is changed.  I bet someone on here does.  At the very least, I imagine this is one of the things you’ll be able to do with a custom hook in v11!

    Hey Andrea,

I do use the Gen Sal button originally, but do you mean that each time I make a change I should hit that button? I was hoping there was a simple way to set it up in the back end, but no worries!

    Thanks,
    Erin

Hi, Erin, I do believe in that situation you need to hit the little Gen Sal button.

  • UP_REBUILD_SALUTATIONS could be scheduled to automatically update all the salutations, if you were sure you wouldn't be unknowingly overwriting a specific patron request for a non-standard saluation.

  • And to further clarify Amanda's point about UP_REBUILD_SALUTATIONS, it accepts a list as a parameter- so you could either create an empty list to which you add constituents on an ad-hoc basis for regeneration, or an all-encompassing one out of which you suppress constituents known to have custom salutations.
