Preparing for a high volume web onsale

It's looking like we are going to have a "really big" on-sale coming up later this week - our first.  We're being told that it should sell out fairly quickly (just over 1500 seats) and most of the sales will be online.

Is there anything special I need to do to prepare for this (besides the obvious - canceling the vacation day I had planned for the on-sale day...)?

Thanks in advance for all advice.

This is a conundrum I’ve dealt with several times. The problem is that if your timeout is less, and your web site slows down from the activity then people need the extra time to complete a transaction. But if the timeout is too long then seats will be locked until the timeout is over. We run into many people who reserve a seat and want to try to get a better seat. The original seats they reserved will be locked for the full time of the timeout. So that’s why you have to monitor the seat locks for any seats that people abandoned by running the Current Seat Locks report. I usually set the timeout for 30 minutes for these large sales.

When looking at timeout settings…remember that it isn’t just the seat server that you have to take into consideration. You have the credit card server, IIS, etc. Attached is a document I created to analyze the various timeout settings. I adjusted these numbers for our purposes, so look at these with an eye on your needs.

    Gloria,

Thanks for the advice – it’s very helpful.

Question for you (or anyone else):  Do you change the seat server timeout value during the on-sale?  We’re currently at 20 minutes and I’m wondering if we should drop it some for the on-sale.

Let’s see…I’ve been through many of these! Here’s my advice:

Run performance monitor on all servers to monitor the activity.

Watch SQL Activity Monitor for process blocks, etc.

I use an analytics service in addition to Google Analytics that lets me see in real time how many people are online. (www.getclicky.com)

If your servers haven’t been rebooted in a while, you might want to do that.

Monitor your bandwidth consumption if you can.

Watch for seat locks both by watching the seat map and by running the Web Current Seat Locks report (a shared report).

    Hope that helps!
