Converting BIDS 2008 Report to BIDS 2005 Report

Recently we developed a report using Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) 2008 and tried to deploy it to SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) 2005 but failed to do so. Apparently it’s not possible to deploy a report made in BIDS 2008 to SSRS 2005 unless you find a way to make the report BIDS 2005 compatible. Microsoft did not play fair in this case. We can use Visual Studio (VS) 2008 or 2010 to create an application but for the report development we have to stick to BIDS 2005 unless we decide to upgrade all components of SQL Server (mainly Reporting Services) to 2008. BIDS 2008 is much more user friendly than BIDS 2005. We wanted to take advantage of these new features of BIDS 2008 without upgrading the SSRS to 2008 immediately.

I had tried to edit the RDL file directly in notepad to make it 2005 compatible but the new Tablix data region was giving me hard time. Did anybody face this situation and find a way to easily convert BIDS 2008 report to BIDS 2005 or a way to deploy BIDS 2008 report to SSRS 2005? Searching Google for a solution did not help me that much in this case. I was trying to avoid working from scratch for this report in BIDS 2005 again.

Thanks for any help,
