Printing from a constituent record to a label printer

Hey everyone,

I'm interested in printing single mailing labels to be used on packages and envelopes too big for a regular printer. Has anyone set up Tessitura to print directly to a shipping label printer like this one? http://www.amazon.com/Brother-QL-570-Professional-Label-Printer/dp/B000ZHEVZ8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1280237929&sr=8-2

I was thinking maybe a modification of the "postage stamp" report in the Constituent screen would do the trick, but maybe someone else has found a solution already? Let me know!

  • We were looking to do the same thing - did you ever go through with this plan/idea?  Did you have success if you tried?

    Thanks

  • Hi John,

I wish I could report back with success but I never went through with it. After reflecting on the work to customize the report to work with a special printer, then finding an elegant way to make it work quickly in the Tessitura interface and deciding which address to use, then considering the cost of the printer and label stock, I stopped pursuing the idea since our current solution (hand-addressing envelopes) works fine.

Let me know how you proceed!

  • Maybe I'm missing something regarding your specific needs... Have you tried using the yellow stamp button in the general tab on a constituent account? That generates a mailing label ready to print onto an envelope.

  • Hi Brian,

I personally was interested because I use 9x6 and 9x12 envelopes daily, and they don't fit through our printers.

  • Is there an output format in User Defined Output from a List that would print to those sizes? Maybe you could copy that report and add it to the Constituent Reports?

  • Are you only  wanting to print for a single customer at a time?

  • Michael,

We use a Dymo Label printer to do this.  When under the General Tab of the constituent we use the Copy to Clipboard icon in Tessitura to copy then paste the address into the Dymo Label program and print.  So if you are in an order you would do a Cntrl+G, while in the General Tab click the Copy to Clipboard icon, paste to your Dymo Label and print.

  • We were looking to click on the yellow stamp.  This would supply the address in proper form, but NOT in proper size to print on a label printer that prints individual labels (Dymo, Brother, etc).  Most of the mailing we do on a one off basis is putting a single label on a brochure, postcard or 10x13 envelope, which wouldn't fit in a traditional printer.

We were looking to see if anyone had resized the print screen that you receive when you click on the yellow stamp and if they had good luck printing this appropriate size screen/label to a dedicated label printer.  I guess the next question is, do you actually need to resize the screen/label, or has anyone had experience with printing the current size screen to a label printer (Dymo, Brother, etc). Trying to find this out before I purchase a label machine and find it doesn't work.

    Hopefully this makes sense.

    Thanks

  • Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. If I were to pick up this project again, I'm guessing that Terry's clipboard solution would be the route I'd choose, because I could implement it with little or no customization from our IT department. (PS -- I've never seen that menu command before!)

John, let me know if you go down the route of more customization. It would be interesting to see the final solution.

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

We are going into our first season using Tessitura and I am very interested to hear if you were able to make this work for you.  We have a Brother Printer that printed individual labels directly from the previous software.  We use individual labels a lot for mailing out single tickets and exchanges.  I'd be interested in keeping this system, instead of writing out each individual's address.

Any help you can give me (for example: what is yellow stamp?) would be apprecaited.

    Thanks!

We actually use the “Constituents\Copy to Clipboard” feature to copy the address info from a constituent record, and then paste it into the Dymo Turbo 400 software, edit the address info as needed, and print the label.

  • Hi Issac -

The 'yellow stamp' that the original post is referring to is an older method in pre v11 Tessitura that you would click on and it would generate a standard envelop template for printing. In v11 and beyond this functionality is located in the Constituents Menu under Constituent Report (standard envelop). The thing to know about the Constituent Report is that you can create custom ones and put them in that menu. So it is theoretically possible for your organization to create (or have one created for you) a template that would print the address on a label sized report.

However, that menu is not available in the Ticket Order module. You'd have to do some extra steps (ctrl-G to the patron info and then go locate that custom report).

Most people use the native functionality of printing a ticket header and having a windowed envelope.

    Good luck!
