Automating Duplicate Merges

Our organization is looking into developing a stored procedure to match and merge some of our duplicate constituent records automatically. Many will still need to be done by hand, but it would be great to get the more clear-cut ones out of the way. Have any of you ever done this before, or do you know anyone who has? I'd love to hear what worked and what didn't, and find an existing procedure to base ours off of.

Back in 2008, when we went Live, we found thousands of (what suddenly became) obvious dupes, and we did a sort of auto merge process, twice if I recall correctly. We set up the Duplicate Matching rules in T_DEFAULTS to be quite strict, identified as potential dupes the records we wanted to merge, and then the only "automated" step we did was to set, for each criterion pair (we handled >2 matching records by hand) to merge into the lowered number record from the higher (As per our established practice; I know some orgs merge lower numbers into higher.)

Do you have SSMS access to your data?
