We have a series of Zebra TC26 scanners that we use with NSCAN.
As we present concerts at almost 100% external venues, the scanners connect to the NSCAN server via a 4G internet connection, and a VPN that sets an IP address that is allowed into our NSCAN environment. A wi-fi connection is not an option in most of our venues, and so our solution must be based on individual 4G internet connections.
We do have issues using the original shipped Android VPN function, in that it's not very sticky. If the 4G internet connection even flickers on and off (due to patchy access in some theatres) the VPN disconnects which requires ushers/users to reset the VPN, and reload the NSCAN profile. This take about 45-60 seconds which doesn't sound much, but if it happens moments before a show is due to come down it causes us significant issues. We also have issues in that we do not employ the ushers, and so training them on this process before each shift is very onerous on both venue supervision and ASO duty ticketing supervisor.
I'm keen to explore options of an 'Always On' VPN that does not require user input. The Android in-built 'Always On' VPN does not work for us (only works for numeric addresses).
What processes or apps are people using for VPN connections for Zebra scanners? We're keen to know!
With thanks! ASO
