Scanner Differences Between Models

Our organization is a fairly new Tessitura licensee and excited to be a part of the community.  We are looking to purchase scanners for the first time.  Can anyone tell me the differences and pros/cons between the TC51(newer model) and TC20 (older model)?

Thank you!

Christie

  • If I recall correctly, the TC20 is actually the newer model released late 2017.

Both units have an optional trigger handle.  The TC51 has a 5" display and the TC20 is 4.3".
Battery life is longer on the TC51.
TC20 is priced about half of the TC51.

Thanks, for the clarification, Todd.  I noticed that the battery is not removable in the TC20. We may decide to go this route, however.  Is the trigger a functional necessity or a minor added convenience, in your opinion?

  • Hi Christie - we tested both the TC20 and TC51. We tried both models with trigger handles. Both worked quite well and were a big improvement over our MC40 devices; however, we ended up selecting the TC51 for the following reasons:

    (1) Slightly better scanning performance. For example, the TC51 didn't seem to be as picky about the angle to scan and worked better scanning a bar or QR code from a mobile phone compared to the TC20.

    (2) Our team liked the larger display better and thought the overall sound in regards to hearing alerts was better on the TC51 compared to the TC20.

The TC20 was not as heavy compared to the TC51, which we did like. But we felt the TC51 was overall the better choice for us.

I saw in a later reply you asked about trigger handles... We are coming from MC40 devices and did not use trigger handles with those. Our team likes the trigger handles and we chose to go that route this time around. If you are on the fence, you might want to get at least one just so you can try it out.

    Good luck!

Much appreciated, David!  These are important points.  We have shifted gears.....it has been decided that we will be moving forward with the TC51s.  It sounds like we can't go wrong with these.  The more versatile scanning, as well as the slightly larger screen sounds like it will work better for our volunteers/staff.
