Parents/children of households

I would like to know if as a rule your organization adds individuals to households as non-primary affiliates if they are not spouses/life partners. Examples include children and parents of primary affiliates. What led your organization to make its decision?

We’ve used associations (not affiliations) to link parents to children instead of affiliations to link children to a household.  The main motivation for our going this route was to make it easier to deal with household split-ups, and for more accurate entry in the case of a parent/child of the A1 but not the A2.

I’m just curious about how organizations approach this conundrum.

Thanks for reading!
