Drivers license scanners

We are looking at potentially scanning drivers licenses to populate demographic information to assist in the creation of new accounts with the objective of reducing the time to manually input the data. While standalone mag readers are going away in lieu of EMV chip readers, I would like to know if anyone is presently using drivers licenses to build account profiles?

Thanks.

Randy

  • Chris, Excellent! That is what I was hoping to hear. Are you going to conference? Can we meet up and chat?

We are doing something similar to this at the Science Museum. Our Minnesota drivers licenses have mag-strips, which helps (some DLs do not...).

It started by using a program called AutoHotkey, but now our custom programmer has moved it to the  more versatile Python language app.

We were concerned about the information it could capture as well, but this one merely populates Name and street address including City, State, Zip, and checks for duplicates in the system before it lets cashier proceed in entering a new constituent. It does not retain any data after the transaction occurs, nor populate any DL numbers. It's pretty slick, and our front-line cashiers have really increased their efficiency (and accuracy) when entering new customers. (Our Membership Department is on cloud 9 about it!)

Feel free to contact me if you want more details. I'm not sure how proprietary the Python app is, but I know we could be willing to share the original AutoHotkey script- (and AutoHotKey is a free application.)

  • I wish I could say "I am going to the conference this year!", but unfortunately it's not in the cards this time around. I'll send you a meeting invite and we can discuss over the phone.

Oh, and I should mention that we are only using mag-readers at this time, I am not sure how/if this will work once we get EMV devices... we may hang on to the mag strips for just this purpose.

To David's question on customer response: our ticketing reps tell us there has not been pushback or uncomfortable-feedback from customers when asked to scan their driver's license  - so that's a pleasant outcome as well.
