Drivers license scanners

We are looking at potentially scanning drivers licenses to populate demographic information to assist in the creation of new accounts with the objective of reducing the time to manually input the data. While standalone mag readers are going away in lieu of EMV chip readers, I would like to know if anyone is presently using drivers licenses to build account profiles?

Thanks.

  • Have you thought about patron privacy and/or uneasiness from patrons about being asked for permission to scan their driver’s license?  I assume in your procedure you plan to ask the patron for permission to scan.

Some people may be uncomfortable having their weight scanned into your system, let alone their driver’s license number.  If you think about PCI compliance, they strongly discourage storing social security numbers and I think a driver’s license number would be a close second to that.

At face value, without knowing any more about your process or technical information, I would not support this practice at my organization.
