Security Settings Overhaul

I would like to embark on a major security settings overhaul - everything from creating new user groups to deciding who has access to which reports/areas etc.

Has anyone recently taken on this sort of project and if so, would you be willing to share your project plan with me? Our security groups were created before we went live in 04 and just don't seem to make much sense anymore. I also wasn't a part of setting up our original user groups and security levels back when we went live, so am not sure where to even start or what considerations I should look at.

Any info that you'd be willing to share would be appreciated!

Michele

    Hi Michele

You might want to refer to this earlier thread as well, which includes a little script to deliver a full list of all your current security settings, including ones that aren't assigned to anybody.

    Hi Beth,

Yes, I’ve already started on the database tables, gathering information from there. I think my biggest issue right at the moment is trying to decide what my main groups should be, but maybe I’m starting at the wrong end and should look at who needs what first and then link like groups together from there.

    Hi Michele,

I'm embarking on a similar adventure at the moment. I don't have a solid plan of action yet (so I'm also curious to see the other responses you get!) but I'm starting with having a look at what everyone has currently. If you have database access there are a number of tables that you can select * from to see what everyone has now (rather than going in manually in the security application). As Rathi also suggested, I intend to make the overhaul in TEST first and having the users check out the changes before doing anything in LIVE.

    Good luck!

    Rathi,

I would appreciate taking a look at that spreadsheet.  My difficulty right now is wrapping my brain around where to start and that might give me an idea.  If you would be willing to share a copy of your matrix as well, I would love to see it.

    Hi Michele,

I did a similar thing here back in 2012.  I don't really have a project plan to share with you, but I essentially spent a lot of time with the security group documentation and then created a matrix and started from scratch to build our new security groups.  I did all of this in test and then went through common business critical scenarios to ensure I wasn't crippling anyone's ability to do their jobs before pushing it live.  I also phased rolling the groups out so that I had time to react if there were any major issues.

I'm happy to send through the spreadsheet I used that has all of the security objects (as of v10) if you think that will help?  Also happy to jump on a call if you want to talk through it at all.

    Thanks,
    Rathi
