Merge when both IDs have active memberships

Hello all,

Our consortium has just begun the process of merging a multitude of duplicate accounts. One of the things we're running into is a handful of accounts where the Keep ID and Delete ID both have active memberships, and are thus prevented from being scheduled for merge.

I've seen from forum postings that this can be changed in the merge procedure but that the results can be iffy.

What is the recommended workaround?

Here's what we are thinking:

  1. Deactivate the membership on the Delete ID
  2. Add a new membership on the Keep ID, with appropriate begin and end dates.
  3. Note the contribution amount in the Notes field of the new membership.
  4. Merge!

Is this what others have done? Any caveats?

Many thanks....

  • Hi Stacey -

This is pretty much what we do - although we generally just edit the current membership (when appropriate) on the keep ID to reflect any changes in level/trends etc. rather than create a new membership. Most of the times we're merging the memberships on the Delete account are smaller online gifts that usually have little impact to the keep accounts membership.
