SYOS Temp Cart and Orphan Seats

We gave this a lot of thought when we implemented SYOS. On the one hand, if you don’t reserve the seats when they are selected then it is possible for someone else to select those same seats before the first person adds them to the cart. In that case the second person gets a message saying the seats are no longer available. However, even worse I think, if you DO reserve the seats when someone selects them, then you can end up with many locked seats (as people click around) and these will not unlock until the seat server releases them, which in our case is 20 minutes. We decided scenario A is the better of the two.

You can control orphan seats by using the ReserveSeatsWithDiscountingSYOS. There is a web config entry for “Leave Single Seats” and we have that set to yes. You can go either way with that. If you say no, and best seating is used, if there are 3 seats in a row available and someone selects 2 it won’t let them because it would leave a single seat.

We are not using a temp cart for SYOS. We do for Best Seating and then transfer the cart from the web anonymous user to the logged in user once they select Checkout.

We are in the process of implementing SYOS and have run into questions regarding the best seat selection process.

For those of you who have SYOS are you using a temp cart where the selected seats are not reserved until they are added to the cart.   Or, are your seats reserved immediately on selection of the seat map? 

We'd be interested to hear pros and cons of a temp cart and any issues others have experienced with their SYOS seat reservations. 

Can a temp cart help in anyway with orphan seating? Have you implemented anything to help control orphan seats?
