Media Capture & Storage

We are currently recording every performance at our 2 major halls here at 92Y. A typical 90 to 120 minute performance generate a 120-180 gByte Prores file as well as an H.264 version for web presentation. On average, we are  producing about 1.5 terabytes of multimedia data per week.

We have no problem with short term storage but have not made up our minds about long term archival storage of these digital files. We are very interested in finding out what other performance centers are doing to preserve their digital archives.

  • We've only just started so have a tiny amount of data and only plan to store 2 recordings per show (about 0.5TB over 2 shows)

Our current plan is to store on the dedicated low spec SAN with an off site tape and HDD.

Amazon Glacier is a possibility as its pay for retrieval.  Due to the size of the files, bittorrent is a possibility to transfer the file from site to amazon.

I'm curious as well as San storage is going to end up very expensive
