I would love to know if anyone has found a way to report on active membership count on a given historic date (regardless of when the expiration date). For example, I want to know how many memberships were active one year ago, regardless of if that membership is now lapsed or is still active. Knowing how many memberships were active one year ago, 2 years ago, etc, is incredibly helpful for tracking growth over time.
I can see counts based on expiration date in a given fiscal year, but this is not quite what I'm looking for.
Anybody cracked the code?

Having an easy-use Membership Active Date is a great idea for Analytics, but comes with challenge. Gawain already posted a link to that related thread (first one in that post).
That aside, for any given time period in which you want to count active members, there is a formula or filter for that. You want a Total Membership Count of memberships with an Expiration Date on or after the start date of the period, and a Start/Initiation Date on or before the end date of the period. For example, for a count of active memberships in September 2021, have a Membership Start Date filter set from Earliest Date to 30-September-2021, and a separate filter on Membership Expiration Date set from 1-September-2021 to Latest Date.
