Add_to_cart event in GA4 from TNEW?

I'm (still/forever) configuring our Google Analytics 4 property, primarily through Google Tag Manager. We use TNEW and I've added the GA4 measurement ID to the Analytics module in Component Editor in TNEW Admin. I can see pageviews, item names, and purchased/revenue numbers, but i'm getting all 0s in items viewed/added to cart.

I have an added complication that our marketing site is built on drupal, and just links directly from our (drupal) event pages to either the Production Season Overview (/overview/[PSID]) or the Event/Item Detail (/[PSID]/[Perf ID]) page; patrons never interact with the Calendar (/events) page. I'm not sure if that might be why the item viewed numbers aren't tracking, or whether TNEW is even sending that info to GA? I was able to create a GTM tag with a trigger to fire based on the Click Text, and that seems to be firing correctly in GTM's preview, but I'm not sure if this is what I have to do to get that tracking, or if it should be collecting it already and something else is wrong.

Anyone else run into this? Or just want to commiserate?

  • Hi, another way to take a look at what might be going wrong is when in gtm preview mode, also open up in another tab, GA4, and go into  admin, and then to debug mode.  The debug window will show you the events that are making it into your  GA4 property from your preview/debug session only. During this time with your tabs side by side, you can browse your site to see what events you are expecting to make it into GA4.Hopefully this can help troubleshoot a bit easier.

Also, you may have done this, but besides setting up the event to pass into GA4 from GTM, you also have to register the add_to_cart event in the Events section of the GA4 admin screen.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thank you for that suggestion, I had forgotten about debug mode! The good news is my GTM tag is firing correctly and showing up in the GA4 admin list of events, the bad news is it won't display in the GA4 Monetization report. The best news is that I'm not doing anything wrong. I got confirmation from my TASK ticket that items viewed and items added to cart just aren't supported yet. Based on what I've found online it's an issue with the data layer and how it's passing that information to GA4. Sounds like it's likely to be in the TNEW roadmap for 7.58.0, though so I'll just use my GTM events until then.
