Customers who only ever pay by cash

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows a way in Analytics (or reports/lists for that matter) to find a list of customers who have only ever paid in cash?

We are doing some analysis on sales patterns and this is the one bit I'm struggling to work out.

Thanks

Kerry

  • Hi Kerry,

I would look for constituents who pay cash, for whom the the total number of distinct payment method types is 1. In the attached example, you'll find it...

    1. Filtered the dashboard on Payment Method Type = Cash, this also limits the scope to just constituents with cash payments
    2. In a new Pivot widget, add Constituent ID on rows.
    3. For proofing purposes, add # unique Payment Method Type as the first value, which will come up all 1s because we're already limited to only Cash.
    4. Add another value that's a # unique Payment Method Type for all but the "(none)" Payment Method Type. In other words, for these constituents who all have at least one Cash transaction, how many distinct payment method types have they ever used. This value level Payment Method Type filter overrides the dashboard filter for the Payment Method Type.
    5. Then hover over that last value and click on the funnel to filter with Values type filter to "= 1".

We are at this point looking at constituents who have cash payment methods for whom that's their only payment method type. This is not limited in any way by time however. So if someone had a payment 5 years ago on a credit card, then they're out. So you could add a transaction date range parameter to set a more limited period of time for only cash payments. This will also exclude people who made a bought a gift certificate with cash and subsequently used that gift certificate for a purchase. If that's a concern, they you can update the value filter on Payment Method Type to exclude not only (none), but also Gift Certificate, or On Account, or...

    Hope that helps. Best,
    Chris
