Extractions: Affiliates, Associations and Suppressions

Like a lot of folks I've seen comment here, we never made much use of the Add Associations feature in lists and extractions before v11, but now we're finding it to be crucial for some of our lists. Yesterday I attempted to help with an extraction for a Group Sales mailing and started to realize how much I don't know. Here's one question that came up.

Will a suppression segment cause segments below to ignore an account if the "main" account is suppressed, but the affiliated account would otherwise be selected?

example:

Seg1 Constituent Type = Organization [suppression]

Seg2 Ticket History Production [add individuals with several affiliation types selected]

scenario: ACME corp, and Organization account type has tickets that match the criteria in Seg2. Joe Smith is an affiliate of ACME of the type selected in Seg2. Will Joe be selected in Seg2?

  • Hey Brian -

I thought I knew the answer and I did a quick test to make sure I was right - my theoretical answer is that the way extractions work is simply by the pool of customer numbers generated by each segment - so segment one pool would have ACME's customer number, and segment 2 would have both ACME's and Joe's customer number. If you suppress seg 1 from seg 2 only ACME should be suppressed.

Just to make sure, I tested it on a very small segment of 1 account.

In segment 1 I added my personal HH constituent number and suppressed it

In segment 2 I again added my personal HH constituent number and chose to add individual affiliates with Adult member type.

My result was 2 accounts - my A1 and A2 account and not my HH account. (which is what I thought would happen)

Ta da! Theoretical answer correct (I think).
