transactions on individual v. household

Former Member $organization

I understand the recommendation is to keep transactions on the household in v11, but there are some arguments within our organization for putting them on the individual affiliates instead. Can anyone weigh in if they are doing this, and with any pros or cons either way?

Thank you!

  • Hi Judy,

As with the other responses, I also agree with forcing transactions to the household.

From a Fundraising perspective, in our testing we’ve found it very useful to have transactions on the household, especially when considering memberships.  It’s so much cleaner to have the memberships and donations reside on the household account.  Plus, it mirrors how things have been processed in the past.

Of course, there may be instances where certain donations or types of memberships might only pertain to one member of the household, but those can be handled on a case-by-case basis where the lines are very clear.  The general consensus though, is that transactions should be made to households.

    Hi Judy -

We're finding that having this 'transition' period where we are learning how a household interacts with all the parts of Tessitura without having to worry about where a transaction lives is extremely useful. I think that if we added another moving piece to the whole paradigm change we'd have some nervous breakdowns in our world. The only real discussion we've had about transactions on affiliates has been with very specific donation scenarios and since keeping the donation on the 'household' account mimics what we've been doing for the last 6 years we're just using this as a prep year for next year when transactions can be marked and flagged in context.

    HTH,

    Heather
