Tax receipts in v11

Hi everyone,

I have a v11 tax receipting connundrum on my hands:

My organization has fairly strict business rules (based on CRA guidelines) on how we issue tax receipts:  we've only issued tax receipts in the name of the actual donor, regardless of whether they have a spouse.  I'm aware that some other Canadian organizations will receipt a donation in the name of both spouses when the situation occurs (I believe this is also within CRA guidelines).

That said, in v10 we were able to specify in the Contributions Editor via the Tax Credit indicator whether to issue the receipt to N1 or N2.  In our testing of v11, we've noticed that this function is no longer available (not really a surprise, given the new constituent model).  I know that we are able to adjust the default behaviour on whether transactions can be made on the household or individual accounts, but I'd rather not have the flexibility to move between the two, because that would mean we'd have some memberships on household accounts and some the A1/A2 accounts, and that makes for very messy reporting.

So, the question becomes - how do we receipt the A1/A2 person when transactions are recommended to be directed to the household?

We've identified a stop-gap solution of using a special Salutation type and manually adjusting the name in the space as the situation calls for it.  However, I'm not sure if that really is the most efficient way to manage it.

Have any other Canadian organizations run into this problem?  Is there a way to receipt the A1/A2 person while still transacting to the household?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

  • A couple thoughts on this:

    1.  You are right that the change to the household model in v11 has changed the way this works.  Our goal in v12 is to extend the use of the new constituent model into transactions so you could say, for example, "this contribution is from the household, but the initiator of this contribution is the A1 affiliate" and then receipt appropriately.

    2. But that obviously doesn't solve your immediate problem.  One suggestion would be to use one of the custom fields in contributions to hold the name of the receipted individual.  You could even make that be a dropdown showing just the A1 and A2 names.  This would mean changing your acknowledgement letters somewhat to use that name (from the custom field) if it exists or use the standard salutation otherwise.

I hope that gives you a direction to start.

  • We are in a similar situation as Christine, but instead of it being a Canadian tax receipt issue, its a University tax receipt issue.  We are also looking at transacting gifts on the household, but referencing the individual.

Chuck - your idea to use a custom contribution field as a dropdown showing just the A1 and A2 names sounds perfect - but how would we accomplish that? Specifically, what could we use in T_KEYWORD for Ref Where to get it to only find that particular household's A1/A2? I think we'll want to store the individual's customer_no. Or am I completely missing the boat on setting this up?

(We went live in v11 two weeks ago, so I'm still trying to find my way around the new model...!)
