Primary addresses

Me again!

I've got a primary address question.  I'm testing in an individual account which is inheriting its address from its household.  The household's address is marked as primary.  I wanted to assign the individual their own separate address and see that it was reflected in my custom header.  Here's what happened:

1) Go into a record
2) Go to the Contact Details tab
3) Try to uncheck the "primary" checkbox on the inherited address
4) Error is thrown: "There has to be a primary address for the constituent."
5) Ok....so add the new address that is specific to the individual and check the "primary" box.  That goes fine and there are now two primary addresses (which seems dicey...)
6) Go back into the first address to un-check the primary box...and it still throws the same error saying that you can't because you have to have a primary address.

What's the logic here?  Is the household address forever to be marked "primary" so that it can inherit to the other people in the family, even after I've created a new address for this individual?  How do you help staff make sense of having two addresses on the Contact Details tab that have the star indicating that they are primary, when of course "primary" would imply "only one at a time?"  Does the "primary-ness" of the individual address just somehow override the "primary-ness" of the household address?

Thanks!

  • Beth - depending on what you are seeing you may also want to put in a help ticket.  But in general, the inherited address on the individual is not a copy of the primray address on the household, it is the actual primary address on the household, so you can not remove the primary flag from the household address since the hh needs it to be primary.  When you add the address on the individual record and make it primary, you are seeing two primary addresses, one for the individual and one for the household and that is expected.  You should then see the individual's primary address on the general tab and only see the household address on the addresses screen.

    Hope that helps
