Quick Dummies Question about Affiliations

Hi,

I thought I'd ask this question in the forums because there may be others that have a similar question.

The issue is around non-primary affiliations and inheritance.

Let's say I get a new company to sponsor me, and they send me a contact list of 20 people that are coming to an event.

I know that if I was making theme primary affiliates of the company, they would inherit the company's address (so no having to re-type in their details and if I didn't know anything else about them except an email and a phone number, this is all we'd have).

But if we add those people as non-primary affiliations of the company, as I understand it, there is no data inheritance. So does that mean it would just create their new records with blank addresses?

Hope that makes sense ...

  • Yes, you have it correct, Beth.  Primary affiliation functionality is intended to allow you to share data between people who live together.

The only special functionality that affiliations add to relationships between individuals and organizations is that you can see all the affiliated individuals on the General tab and in the Constituent Navigator.

Something I just remembered is that if you add a new individual constituent from the Relationships tab of an organization, you have the option of copying the organization’s contact data to the individual.  This is not the same as inheriting, though, so any changes you make to the contact data on the organization will to be applied to the individual.  Here’s a link to a help topic that explains this functionality.

  • Thanks Kevin. I'm not so worried about inheritance, but just a quick way of getting contacts in there with addresses in the first place. The option to create a new constituent out of the Relationships tab will be fine.
