Quick Dummies Question about Affiliations

Hi,

I thought I'd ask this question in the forums because there may be others that have a similar question.

The issue is around non-primary affiliations and inheritance.

Let's say I get a new company to sponsor me, and they send me a contact list of 20 people that are coming to an event.

I know that if I was making theme primary affiliates of the company, they would inherit the company's address (so no having to re-type in their details and if I didn't know anything else about them except an email and a phone number, this is all we'd have).

But if we add those people as non-primary affiliations of the company, as I understand it, there is no data inheritance. So does that mean it would just create their new records with blank addresses?

Hope that makes sense ...

  • We've been discussing this at SMM as well.  My understanding is that the primary affiliation is meant only to connect an individual with their primary household - the one they actually live in.  It's never to be used for anything else.  That's why you can't have a primary affiliation to an organization, among other things.

Kevin, can you confirm whether that's correct, and perhaps comment on the logic behind that functionality? I feel like we're missing a little of the big picture.

    Thanks!
    Beth

    Hi Matt,

The first thing to know is that you cannot make affiliations to organizations primary, so it’s not possible for individuals to inherit data from organizations.  If you want to create individual records for the 20 contacts you will have to meet whatever new record requirements you have set at your organization.  In v10, that meant you had to have (or make up) a postal address, but in v11 you have the option to make no contact data required or make any contact data required (i.e. a postal address or email address).

    Does that answer your question?
