Has anyone figured out how to add a pending comp membership to a constituent who already has a currently active membership in the same organization? Right now we're putting calendar invites on our Outlook calendars to remind ourselves to add the new membership the day after the current one expires but this leaves plenty of room for error, not least of which is the issue of suppressing these people from renewal mailings.
Thanks for any ideas anyone has!
Anne
Hi Anne,
For comp memberships to activate when the current expires, make sure you have the campaign built that the membership is going to be active. Then you can manually add a membership under the new campaign and select your start date to begin the day after the current expires. That will put the membership into pending status and it will activate when that date hits. You cannot have two active memberships of the same organization in the same campaign.
For paid memberships, when you are processing the gift, on the membership tab in contribution editor you select the button "Allocate Funds," then in the pop-up window select "Add New Membership." The system will then add a membership to their account that will activate when the current expires.
Hope this helps!

Hi Ashley,
I do have the campaign built but when I go to add the comp membership on the constituent record, the first thing I have to do is select the membership organization and it won't let me get past that field since the constituent has an active membership in that org. I'm not able to select the campaign before the organization. Is there some background setup piece I'm missing to allow this?
Thanks!
My apologies! I misunderstood. Our set-up is that all memberships live on the household record, and I have not found a way to manually add a comp membership when there is an active one on the household account without deactivating the active membership. (But you can manually add one to an individual within the household account, even with the same year/campaign.)
A work-around could be to create a "Comp" payment method for your memberships and process through contribution editor using the allocate funds option, but that could get messy and probably isn't ideal.
