Auto Renew Comp Memberships

We are implementing complimentary staff memberships; we use the contributions/memberships model (not memberships as products). I want to be able to automatically renew these memberships for staff members for as long as they work here. Has anyone found a way to automatically renew comp memberships? The out-of-the-box auto-renew utility returns an error because there is no credit card associated with the contribution.  I'm pretty sure I could create a custom version of this utility to ignore the credit card and payment schedule requirement; but thought I'd check here in case anyone has already come up with a solution they're willing to share.   • We just input staff membership with an expiration date many decades out. When they leave the museum, we change the date to the month of their departure (HR and CRM staff work together on this). Unless they need new cards or an acknowledgement each year, you just don't need to "renew' them at all.
