New contributions not applying to existing membership

Hello everyone.

Here's a quick scenario. John contributes $250 on October 1, and a "Director" ($250-$499) membership is automatically assigned as it should be. A month later he makes an additional $200 contribution, so he should still be in the "Director" level but the numbers should change, right? I would expect to see Amount $450, AVC Amount $200, and I don't know what Recognition Amount is but I can manually change that. Now, the AVC amount is correct, but the amount is still at $250. Is this going to mess up my reporting? Is there any way to correct this, or something I'm doing wrong?

Many thanks.

James

  • I think this confusion is my fault, because when I click "Contributions" under the Membership, it does show both correct contributions. I guess Amount is equal to the lowest amount required for a given level ($250 in this instance, as it is showing) and AVC Amount is anything given above that minimum if still within that giving level. So Amount + AVC Amount should equal the sum of the contributions, which it does in this case. Can anyone confirm?

  • Hi James - that's correct. From the Membership Records article in the help system:

Amount – The contribution start amount for the level of the membership record. For example, if the start amount for the level is $1000 and $4000 is contributed, the Amount will be $1000.

AVC Amount (Additional Voluntary Contribution)– The value of all contributions allocated to the membership record above the start amount for the level. For example, if the start amount for the level is $1000 and $4000 is contributed, the AVC Amount will be $3000.

Recognition Amount – Defaults to the amount of the first contribution allocated to the membership record. This field can be manually adjusted to the amount for which the member should be recognized. Generally this is only adjusted when the member should be recognized at an amount greater or less than what he or she has actually given.

  • Hi, James—

As I understand memberships, it sounds as if you’re doing it right. The membership level, $250, is the base amount for that level. If he had given an additional $300, moving him to the next level, the membership level would report as $500. The recognition amount is always, after the first gift, a manual process during gift entry or after. Perhaps you want to recognize your $250 donor at the $1,000 level because of intangible something-or-other. So you’d update the membership to be at the level that encompasses the level you want to recognize (and your AVC would be a negative number, but the membership level and recognition level will be whatever you need it to be.
