Have you considered using Google Voice for this? You wouldn’t be able to get a 5-digit short code – it’d have to be a full phone number, but it is a free service that does exactly what you’re looking for (incoming text->email, email reply->text; you could probably set up an automatic response on the receiving e-mail box to accomplish your last need).
