Donation page URL sources in TNEW? In-house vs. outside?

I'm trying to track several different sources within an end of year giving appeal and encountering two issues. 

  1. Two of the sources were from extractions and promoted to accounts, so they were in-house sources. When I try to create a URL that has the source in it (these were going to be for email lists), I get an error message. This doesn't happen with the outside sources I created.
  2. Even the outside sources are not showing up in completed orders. All orders using the appended URLs are coming through with our default web source. 

The in-house URL (that support told me to use): https://cart.montclairartmuseum.org/donate/contribute1?promo=1938

The outside source URL: https://cart.montclairartmuseum.org/donate/q/donate-now?promo=1956

  1. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
  2. Can in-house sources be used in URLs at all? 
  3. Does anyone have tips and tricks or best practice recommendations for sources?
