How do you feel about pop ups on a performing arts website as a lead generation tool? Do they create engaged leads? Do you think they convert or do they just bulk out lists and ultimately increase bounce rates? Do you use a carrot (sign up and save?). I am interested in having any and all input -- good, bad, and oh hell no!

I don't mind them when they are tasteful, easy to dismiss, and smart — for example, you could make sure to auto-suppress (and persist that suppression) when your site notices that it is being accessed from a link containing a tracking tag from your email program. It feels pretty silly to get an email from a list, click a link in that email, and then be immediately prompted to sign up for the exact same list!
Thanks Nick, your answer highlights my major concern. The ability to do this in a way that is "smart". I'll let you know what we end up with.
