Gender Choices in Surveys

Hello!

We are having an internal discussion about making our surveys more inclusive, keeping in mind that offering choices is still forcing people to make a choice.

I'm wondering how other organizations are handling this? We are grappling with do we just change the choices or perhaps begin slowly by asking the question: To which gender identity do you most identify? And, leave it open-ended allowing people to self-report for let's say three surveys, review responses and perhaps move forward with the below.

We're clear that by not offering specific choices, data analyses becomes a bit more difficult and in the end, it is a bit anecdotal.  The other is the "why?" question.  What will we use the data for?  This question is being asked on a simple after show survey that offers a discount.  The responses are not being shared with the organization or used for a specific purpose by marketing.  It is, however, important to know audience makeup as it informs so much.

I tried finding articles on this in the forums but nothing came up when I searched "Gender Survey," etc.  I would love to hear how other organizations have navigated this!
