Max Refund Amount - what does this mean exactly?

Hello!
We're looking at our user group policies and our max refund amount is currently set at the default of 999,999,999. Is that Max Refund the maximum amount you can refund in a period of time or an order or in total? I can't find an exact definition of it in the documentation.
Thanks!

  • Hi Jane - I'm about 95% confident on this, I believe the max refund amount is evaluated on a per-payment basis. A sample use case might be if you want to allow a general Box Office user group to issue refunds up to (let's say) $100 without any limitations, but escalate up to a separate Box Office Manager user group if a larger refund needs to be processed. Or if you have separate payment methods for web credit cards vs phone/walk-up credit cards, and you want to limit which user groups are allowed to reverse online purchases.

We had to dial up some of our refund caps for box office staff during the great cancellations of 2020 in order to process returns faster, and I don't remember hearing any word about a refund limit being reached across different orders or transactions - so I think it gets checked every time a payment is going to be run. Hopefully someone else can validate that too!

  • Evan is correct and spot on with his use cases.
