Direct Debit Billing

Asked on behalf of our CFO: According to the latest Tessitura documentation (wow, I actually read some of it!), Section 3.A.4 speaks of a Direct Debit Billing utility that is apparently only available in the U.K. at present.

What's the official word of [eventual, I presume] availability in the U.S.?

Anyone?  Anyone?

Bueller?

Bonus Trivia: Cameron's father's Ferrari 250GT California Spyder, in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, was actually a fake.  It was too expensive to rent one, so three fakes were made over MGs with fiberglass bodies.  The effect was so complete that many enthusiasts wrote angry letters about wrecking such a special car in the movie.

  • Hi Matt

Everyone has the utility but it is only of use in the UK.  Essentially the utility generates a data file used to transmit direct debit instructions to banks for the direct debit payments (i.e. directly debiting money from constituent’s bank accounts), formatting according to the banking rules in the UK.  It also makes corresponding direct debit payments on the orders or contributions being billed.  It does not directly transmit data like when you charge a credit card and it is also not the same thing as debit cards.  The US corollary would be receiving someone’s checking or savings account and routing numbers and collecting payment using that information.  Is that what your CFO is hoping to do?  Or did he think direct debit was something else?

  • I don’t know about Matt, but I know I would love to be able to do direct-debit transactions to people’s checking accounts.  This is the holy grail of “sustainer” or “monthly giving” programs.

I know I’ve done it online for some purchases (and seen the debit on my checking account in a matter of minutes), so the technology must exist where we could connect this kind of billing to Tessitura.  Perhaps with Project Reindeer?
