Credit Card Fees (Surcharges)

Hi everyone.

Looking for the word on the street re: best way to apply a % fee based on payment method, ie, credit card fees. We aren't charging surcharges at all at the moment, and are investigating if and when we will, in line with the recently published RBA / LPA guidelines for 'Payment Card Surcharge Standards' (http://liveperformance.com.au/Payment-Card-Surcharge-Standards).

We may want to specify out a different % based on card type (ie, more for AMEX), so it would be great to have one that can be set by payment method for both online, and box office sales.

Looks like I'll be mainly asking my Australian colleagues, as it appears by looking around there are some restrictions for this for our US counterparts.

Thanks in advance for the collective Tessitura wisdom!

Cheers, Tom.

  • Hey Tom,

At Arts Centre Melbourne we have been charging a payment processing fee for a few years now and have charged one flat rate across all card types. We will still do this as we adapt to the new standards and if we charge this fee to consumers, it will be at our lowest cost of acceptance rate. This is a fee that is applied across all applicable performances and our Box Office team override it when the customer is paying by cash / cheque / Savings Account.

A few things to be careful of though:

    ·         Because you currently can’t specify the payment method that the fee applies to , the fee will also apply for those paying by gift certificate online. We call our fee a “Payment Processing Charge” instead of a credit card fee, partly because of this.

    ·         If you did a web customisation to apply different Tessitura fees based on payment method, you probably would need to ask for the payment method upfront (and then somehow validate that they actually use the payment method they say they are using). Otherwise, you may risk falling into a drip pricing scenario.

Our team would be happy to chat about it further with you, if you’d like more information.

    Beau @ Arts Centre Melbourne.
