Continuing Education: Beyond K-12 Learning

We're working on a session for TLCC 2019 and would love to hear about continuing education/adult learning opportunities your organization offers. Please let us know what you're doing and whether or not you're using Tessitura to manage the program.

Thanks,

Sara Nemeth (Cincinnati Ballet) and Margaret Stockton (Jazz at Lincoln Center)

  • Hi Sara,

The ballet has Open Adult, Adult Dance Workshops, and Adult Master Classes for ages 18+. We also have Adaptive Dance Training & customized training for those who wish to teach/develop their own Adaptive Inclusive Programs. Adaptive Dance training is currently sold via Tessitura/TNEW, however our Adult dance program classes (Open, Workshops, Master Classes) are sold via MindBody at the instigation of the school. The school feels that it provides a better experience for their adult dance community, as well as a platform the adult group is familiar with from yoga and cycle classes etc. To my chagrin I am not able to recreate what the school finds most impact and useful from MindBody in Tessitura/TNEW at this time, however I am hoping that this is on the radar of the people powers that be (hint hint hint) and that the education functionality can be expanded into a comparable "mind-body model".

    Cheers,

    Michaela Donnelly (Boston Ballet)

  • Thanks Michaela! I love the idea of teaching others how to teach as an adult learning concept.

Outside of the conversation about this TLCC session, I'd love to connect at some point about MindBody. We use that for our Adult Ballet classes too, but want to figure out how to bring those into the Tessitura fold. Maybe we could get others together for an Open Space conversation around the topic?

    Hi Sarah,

In our Recreational Division the RWB offers adult dance classes in various disciplines during our five-week Adult Summer Dance Program (Jul-Aug). Currently we offer registration online using Tessitura (v15) and TNEW (v6). We have it set up to collect our registrations as CSIs, which it definitely not perfect but functions OK with some significant workarounds.

We also offer adult dance classes in our Recreational Division regular program session (Sept-Jun) for which registration has only ever been in person, however we intend to offer online registration to our Adult students in the regular session for the first time this year, much in the same way as the Adult Summer Dance program. We also offer two ExplorAbility programs for adults who are challenged by physical movement. These registrations are not offered online.

In our Professional Division, we offer a four-week Teacher’s Summer Workshop in July. These registrations are handled through Tessitura/TNEW and again collected as CSIs as above.

As a yoga student, I have used MindBody from the student side and love what that program can do. I agree with Michaela that the current Tessitura/TNEW functionality falls somewhat short from an education program/class registration perspective. MindBody seems to be the program which is most often held up as the best example of how we would eventually like to be able to manage our programs and registrations on the school side.

An Open Spaces discussion around this topic would be great !

  • Hi Sara,

I would absolutely love to talk more about MindBody and bring Tessitura more in line with that type of functionality. I would love to have some of our web products friends in on the conversation, because I have ideas...so many ideas! Alas I do not think I am going to TLCC this year, we have a limited budget and switch off staff who attends, and this year is not me. (Can one call in to an Open Space discussion?)

All kidding aside Karin Krueger is absolutely correct that Tess/TNEW falls short with education and class reg perspective. All that is being done with room and asset management for events, tours, etc. is amazing and you can customize registration (which we have done) however, it is still a bit of a work around and not as clean and clear as I would like to see it. What is especially frustrating for me is that the way they are starting to build out TNEW with v7 shows real opportunity for creating something that could really work for what we need, I look at it and I see so much opportunity but I am at a loss as to how to (or who to) share my ideas/thoughts with. I think others, like yourself, would also have really valuable insight into the conversation as well.

  • I'm totally with you. We had to do a major TNEW customization (back in 2016) for our camps/classes year-round. With over 6,000 campers in the summer alone, there is no way I would have been able to make it work using CSIs. That doesn't even count all of our other education programming. Seriously...this is a major area that needs to be designed and put in place asap. I'd even love to be on the team to help decide what's important functionality for education programs.
