Combined Arts Campaigns

Hello All!

How do other organizations enter and classify contributions received from organizations like United Way? In KC, MO we have a workplace giving forum called Arts KC Fund which operates in the same manner as United Way. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

We don’t get much money from such campaigns, so it would depend.  Generally, I enter it to a record set up for the united fund, but I do send thank you notes to each donor, assuming I can get the information form the campaign (which is not always available).  Of course, you have to be careful about the tax receipt since they may get the deduction from the campaign.  Nonetheless, if the gift is sizeable I would set up a record for that patron so we could track it and soft credit the patron since the check came from the united fund.  Sometimes the fund takes a service fee, and it is easier to charge that fee against the fund rather than against the donor.

If you have lots of such gifts, you may want to record the gift directly to the donor and use channels or sources (and the indication in the check screen) to show that it was not a check directly from the donor.
