Membership cards & NScan

We do have a bar code on our membership cards.  We don't track it in to Tessitura, but it is scanned at our parking ramp just to help with cash controls on the discount that members receive on parking.  The biggest hint I can give you is that you can put their member number or whatever other data you want in the barcode and just use the barcode 3 of 9 font (also called barcode 39 font) in Word - just download it online.  The trick is that in order for the barcode to work, you have to use a * on either side of your data.  So, if you put member number 557367 on the card and just select that text and put it in the barcode font, it will LOOK like a barcode; but it won't work when you scan it unless you list is at *557367*.  The *basically cues the scanner to know "hey pay attention, this is the start of a barcode" as far as I understand.

The other tip I'd give is to make sure you test it on your scanners and see that it's working as you want it to; it's easy to miss things like "oh, we need to add a *on each side."  Testing is the best way to avoid that.

We print our cards on regular laser printers right out of word and it prints the barcode just fine.

Hi all,

At the PSO we have a lounge that donors at a certain giving level have access before concerts and during intermissions.  We would like to print membership cards with a barcode and use our scanners to scan their membership cards when they enter the lounge.  The same card will be used throughout the entire season (some donors come to 22 concerts) so trying to detrmine what we would need to do to get this in place.  If anyone is doing this it would be great to hear from you and to find out any helpful hints you could offer on the best ways to set it up.  Thanks.
