Assign Memberships Retroactively

Hello all,

We have a constituent who has been donating annually for about 5 years and each year gifting his membership to his daughter.  The membership was never assigned to his daughter--we were manually tracking this outside of Tess for communications to her.  Last year, the gift was soft credited, but there was still no membership assigned.  So, for one year, the Contribution is in her record, but the Membership is in his, and for all other years, all Membership and Contribution history is in his account.

This became an issue this year when he renewed her Membership early and we properly Assigned Membership during Contribution Entry--now they both have active Memberships.  I am hesitant to just Cancel or Deactivate last year's Membership in his account because it could mess up reporting on Renewals later. In encountering this problem, I am also tempted to fix all other past Contributions so that accurately reflect the Membership history.

I tried to fix the most recent gift in Test Tess by Adjusting.  It would not let me assign Membership -  I think because there was already a Soft Credit.

I tried to fix previous gifts in Tess by Adjusting, and although I was permitted to Assign Membership, once I closed the Contribution, the Membership detail in the Membership tab remained in the Benefactor's account, not his daughter's.

Is there any way to properly fix this?  If not, is it more advisable to Deactivate or Cancel, or to just ignore until the Membership expires?

Any help appreciated!!

Thank you,
